Super Star Trek 25th version 1.11 released

The new version of Super Star Trek (1978) meets 25th Anniversary represents a significant improvement in terms of User Experience.

1. The game now accepts three different input modes.

  • Traditional mouse+keyboard interface: you select a function with the mouse and then use the keyboard to enter shields, phasers values, and select torpedo course.
  • Keyboard (or controller) only: you can use the key bindings (L, S, P, T, etc.) to activate a specific function (Phasers, Shields, etc.), but you can also select the function with cursor keys (or TAB) and select them with Enter. You don't need to type the value of the Shields or Phasers: now you can use cursors (left/right for small increases or up/down for bigger increases) and confirm the value with Enter. In all the dialogs (Options, Save Game, and so on), you can select the element with TAB and "click" on it with Enter. This means you can play entirely with a controller if you map your controller to Cursors + Enter/TAB/Esc. If you want, you can use the "H" key to hide the mouse pointer.
  • Mouse (or touch) only: Shields, Phasers, and Torpedoes required a keyboard to enter the value or select the torpedo course. Now you will find three buttons on the right. Press the UP/DOWN buttons to increase/decrease values or change the torpedo course. Confirm with the third button. During impulse speed, you can now simply click the destination cell, and the Enterprise will move. You can open the game options by clicking on the small console on the left of the Enterprise screen. This means the Web version is also playable on mobile. It works perfectly on Android phones and tablets. On iOS, it works, but there are still some glitches. Let me know if you test it.
  • There is no "mode switch". The game simply accepts all inputs. If you are on a PC with a mouse and keyboard, you can manually enter the shield value, increase/decrease it with Left/Right cursors, or click on the buttons. Up to you

2. The game now has a proper logo, cover screen, and a new style for the buttons and dialogs.

  • The new amazing graphics include a new Logo, game icon, the Itch.io Cover, Top Banner, and all the Steam Deck assets (logo, grid icons, hero banner). Many thanks to Marina Mekail. You can download the Steam Deck assets separately in the ZIP file.
  • The game cover is also used as a menu screen. When you launch the game, you will see the main menu, allowing you to change the language, customize options, Start a new game, or Restore an old game.
  • The new UI graphics use buttons and fonts inspired by Star Trek: 25th Anniversary. The Up and Down buttons are taken from the game.

3. Additional features

  • New localizations: Portuguese, thanks to João P. de Sousa, and German, thanks to Furmedok McGeek (Catalan and Czech were already available).
  • There is a new Autosave each time you arrive in a new sector. This way, you can restart if a fight was particularly unlucky :)
  • Some options, like your Language choice, are automatically saved. Some options, such as volumes, are still not saved.
  • Many minor bug fixes, especially related to the transition of states or opening/closing GUI.

I need to thank Joan CiberSheep and DanielZima, that helped me with translations and playtesting, but also ZeroBANG for the Steam Deck test and the suggestions to create the assets; and finally, Michael Adcock for the test on Android and Raspberry PI and suggestions about the controls and other features I haven't implemented yet.

Version 1.12 contains an additional BUG FIX that solves a problem when the Enterprise was positioned in Sector 1,1 at the beginning of the game.

This will be the last major update for a while (fixes or new localizations are excluded). I plan to add a story to the game, but this will take some time. Have fun in the meantime!
